Synopsis

Dr. Lewis develops, coordinates and oversees the clinical experiences of physical therapy students throughout the professional phase of the physical therapy program as part of the clinical education team. Her primary teaching responsibilities are Medical Ethics and labs for Neuromuscular I. She also teaches classes on progressive neurologic disorders, such as ALS, and on topics related to physical therapy in the acute care setting, such as discharge planning. Shelly is a board-certified clinical specialist in geriatric physical therapy and was awarded the 2018 Clinical Educator Award from the American Physical Therapy Association’s Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy. Shelly is involved in many professional organizations, including leadership roles, such as serving as secretary for the Philadelphia Area Clinical Education consortium.

Professional Information

Dr. Shelly Lewis has worked in the acute care, rehab, outpatient, SNF/sub-acute and home care settings. She began her physical therapy career at Pennsylvania Hospital in 1997, where she still works as a per diem acute care physical therapist. Shelly is an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor and served as the Center Coordinator of Clinical Education at Pennsylvania Hospital for 13 years, coordinating up to 40 students a year for physical, occupational and speech therapy. Since 1999, Shelly has been involved in research, peer-reviewed publication, advocacy, educational offerings and volunteer work for the Philadelphia chapter of the ALS Association. She served as the sole PT at the multidisciplinary ALS Center at Pennsylvania Hospital for over a decade. Dr. Lewis continues to remain involved in volunteer and advocacy work for this organization.
